Creators of the Support Group Method
Training

The relationship between the publishing and the training work of Lucky Duck is an essential and special aspect that contributes to the success of the company.

It is rare that we have the time to plan and promote our work through open courses so most of our training is by invitation from groups or establishments approaching us. We tailor courses to suit establishments and this makes it difficult to describe any specific workshop. We hope the following information answers some of your questions and if you require further details don't hesitate to contact us.

The Courses

The three most popular workshops are:

Bullying, Creating a Safer School

We explore what is meant by bullying, and agree an acceptable definition. We then challenge many commonly accepted ways of dealing with bullying and lead into our non punitive, problem solving, Support Group Method. This method is supported in the publication "Don't Suffer in Silence" DfEE 2001 - Support group Approach pages 28 - 29. We stress the need for schools to have a clear policy that explains how they will raise the awareness of pupils but that also clearly states how incidents of bullying will be dealt with.

A Self Concept Approach to the Management of Learning & Behaviour

This workshop is more open to negotiation regarding content.

We discuss what we mean by self-concept and whether how we feel about ourselves influences our learning and behaviour.

Content usually includes issues such as;
Communication, both verbal and non verbal. We look at how we give praise and how we often communicate ineffectively in times of conflict. New patterns of communication are introduced to participants.
Punishments, how these are used and whether they are effective in terms of changing behaviour or enhancing relationships.

We can also introduce ideas such as Circle Time, Bullying or Problem Solving in this day.

Emotional Literacy / Intelligence

This workshop develops our self-esteem workshop. We look at the importance of emotional literacy and introduce our MOT model of learning:

The importance of Models - The need to create Opportunities - If young people don't acquire emotional literacy through models and opportunity, we need to Teach.

Content is negotiated to meet the needs of the establishment but could include:

  • The power of language
  • Developing an emotional vocabulary
  • Circle Time
  • Developmental group work
  • Teaching skills
  • Listening
  • Anger management
  • Problem solving
  • Conflict resolution
  • Peer mediation
  • The use of story to develop emotional skills.

We also run workshops on:

  • Circle Time and Developing Circle Time
  • A Circle of Friends
  • Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution
  • Anger Management
  • Peer Mediation.

Teacher Effectiveness Training

In 1989 we travelled to California to learn the Teacher Effectiveness Programme developed by Thomas Gordon. We think we are the only trainers in the U.K. who can teach this course. It is a 24-30 hour course which can be run over 4 days or as a series of half day sessions spread over a term.

If you are interested in one of these INSET days for your school or establishment, you can either call us or fill in the form below. Barbara or George will then contact you to discuss your requirements, the cost and possible dates they are available. We look forward to hearing from you.

Evaluation

We can provide details of people to contact if you would like an independent opinion about the quality of our work.

We have provided training in Europe, America and Australia. We have worked in all parts of the U.K. from the inner city to independent schools, from infant schools to F.E. Colleges.

We have produced a wide variety of books and videos, written articles for journals, have appeared on national T.V. and have had our work positively reviewed. We are often controversial, usually challenging and we hope interesting and relevant.
